By Jack Bend

Fly fishing rod and reel

Choosing the right type of salmon fishing rods is largely depends upon a number of factors which is includes the location of where the fishing is taking place, fishing method, season and what species of salmon are you desire.

Why you should risk your fishing trip with unqualified rod and reel. I understand the philosophies that buy the fly fishing gear don’t have to break your bank account but for the experience you may have, quality rod is a must.

The Fly Rods

A fly fishing rod for salmon is typically more flexible, longer, and lighter through the handle and the butt than bait rod. The double handed fly rod will enable you to cast with one and both hands which is also becomes better solution for using heavier reels and lines when you are angling for the heavier and bigger salmon.

When you are fishing from the boat or in deeper waters, the length of your average rods could be anywhere from ten to fifteen feet because it will provide an additional height to your casting action.

Under twelve feet rods is the option for a children and women as well as shorter men, while fourteen to fifteen feet rods is for taller men and anglers who wish to fish in large waterways.

Choosing the right one to makes your casting more accurate whatever the length, the rod has to be able to bend the length and flexible and has to be and quickly snap back into place, and remember to keep it heavy enough to withstand the battle with a 10 – 35 pound salmon while keep slender to get rid of wind resistance.

Fly Reels

Salmon fly reels should be of rugged construction with plenty spool capacity for the fly lines you intends using, plus sufficient backing. Make sure your fly reels drag is highly responsive and can cope with the strain and tension of really big salmon which is generally the most expensive one.

What makes your salmon fishing rods becomes qualified is all depends on your style, techniques and the way you love your rod.

Salmon fishing rods

alaska salmon fishing charters

The best fishing seasons in Alaska is from May thru early September, if you refer to salmon. May and June are good for Chinook and July, august and early September is predominantly by Coho, and Halibut, rock cod and yellow eye are available for all season long. Alaska charter fishing is world-class. Whether you troll of salmon, jig for halibut or fish for trout you are bound to have the experience of the lifetime.

If you are wondering about how to start your fishing, than Alaska charter fishing will help you out. There are so many charters in Alaska and they provide fishing boat, tackles, captain who knows how to wade the boat through the Alaskan water with quality tackling techniques to catch fish.

The guide who has plenty of experience fishing in Alaska will ensure you to catch fish and will take you exactly to the fishing spot where your fish are waiting to catch. Most of the Alaskan charters are further categorized into salmon fishing charter and halibut fishing charters. Every species of the fish has its own challenge which presents itself when you are going to catch this fish.

In case you want to go on salmon-halibut hunting than you can choose to have fishing combo package from your charter but my opinion is salmon and halibut are different kind of fishes, you will need enough preparation to face some of the test that these fishes will give you.

Most of Alaska charter fishing equips with a fully functional GPS system which allows the captain of the boat contact ashore in case the weather turn nasty but Alaskan weather is not as unpredictable as we make it out to be, but GPS system provides safety for the fishing guest.

What do I bring on my fishing trip to Alaska, What about weather & bugs, is there a good time of the year to avoid these?

Can I fish without a guide or I don’t fish often, will my guide help me if I hook the big one, do the fishing guides/boat captains accept gratuity, What about tipping, How much and to whom?

What will the weather be like in Alaska, How much daylight can I expect in the summer and what kind of weather will I need to dress for?

· What happens to the fish we catch, How is the processing of our fish handled, What is the cost of additional fish packaging and boxes, How do I get my fish back home, and How long will my fish last once it is vacuum packaged?

· Can I go on the boat if I don’t fish, What if I am coming by myself, do you accommodate individuals, Can my group go on the boat if we don’t fish, How many people can fish in your boats, What if I have a group larger than 6, can we be accommodated?

In 1985, Soldotna fishermen named les Anderson break world record caught of salmon in Kenai River with the weight of 97 pounds, 4 ounces. And still keep the records till now, even once in 1945 caught the biggest salmon but many are skeptical due to less visual proof.

Chinook, their original name derived from the tribal name of the Indians that previously lived alongside the Columbia River in Washington State. King salmon is commonly referred to this species in Alaska fisheries. They are also known as Tee Salmon, Quinnat, Jack, Black, Spring, Tyee, Chub, Winter, Hook Bill, Blackmouth salmon

Chinook also called “Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha” in scientific term. Oncorhynchus means hooked snout and Tshawytscha is the named that given by the people of the Kamchatka Peninsula, in Russia

Due to their great fighting abilities, large size and high quality meat, Chinook salmon is the most highly prized sport fish in Alaska. Trolling with rigged herring or herring attractors as bait is probably the most preferred method for salt water sport fishing. Salmon eggs and lures are used by freshwater anglers commonly.

Mature Chinook are piscivorous, feeding on small fish such as herring, aquatic insects, anchovies, sand lances, young rockfishes, and zooplankton as well.

Chinook salmon runs in Alaska are typically seen starting in May and ending in August. If you are not familiar with the natural movement of the salmons, than fish finders extremely can be beneficial.

Commercial king salmon fisheries areas include Bristol Bay, Cook Inlet, Copper River, Sitkine River, Taku River, Chignik, Southeast, Kuskokwim River, Yukon River, Prince William Sound, and more.

You will need stamp beside of your Alaskan sport fishing license to fish for salmon and for non Alaska residence the fishing license cost per day is $30, per seven days is $ 85 and both annual licenses combined cost for $245. There are also available 3 and 14 days license.

Other reason to target king salmon is because the nutritional of the Chinook itself. 100 grams of Chinook salmon has 231 calories, 25.7 grams of protein, 13.3 grams of fat, 3.2 grams of saturated fat, 60 milligrams of sodium, 85 milligrams of cholesterol, 1.7 grams of Omega-3.
